Luna Rossa 1 sensationally set the early pace in the official practice racing helmed by Peter Burling and Marco Gradoni. Nine out of the ten (Australia missing) took the AC40s out for a spin in the Naples harbour. Practice races in sailing are full of superstition with many racers doing everything they can not to win them. However, for the Luna Rossa Principal team, they failed to read the superstitious script and put down a marker from the start, coming out and smoking the fleet by enormous margins – up to 500 metres at times – to win all three races. Tricky for some and a 'walk in' the harbour for others. GB1, the British America’s Cup Challenger, sustained damage to its AC40 race boat following an incident with Swiss team Alinghi’s chase boat while training on the Bay of Naples ahead of the second Preliminary Regatta. © 38 America's Cup
